The Best Legal Professions in France 2025

The field of justice and law plays a structuring role in social and institutional organization. With the near-constant evolution of legislative frameworks, the emergence of new economic and societal factors, and the growing complexity of litigation, the demand for highly trained specialists continues to rise.

Here is an overview of the ten most in-demand legal professions.

1.Notaire (Notary)

The Notaire is a public officer whose main function is to authenticate legal acts and grant them indisputable legal value. Their work covers real estate transactions, inheritances, donations, marriage contracts, and sometimes corporate structuring.

Entry into the profession typically requires a Master’s degree in notarial law followed by the Diplôme Supérieur du Notariat (DSN), validated by two years of work-study in a notarial office.

Another route consists of passing the concours de notaire, followed by further training.

2.Avocat (Lawyer)

An Avocat advises, represents, and defends clients, whether individuals, public institutions, or private companies. The profession requires expertise in several highly sought-after specializations.

  • Around one-third of Avocats practice in business law and taxation, which is particularly in demand among companies in 2025.
  • About 15% specialize in labor law, focusing on employment and human resources issues.
  • Criminal law, oriented toward defense and prosecution in criminal and misdemeanor cases, remains a vital field.
  • Intellectual property and digital law are increasingly attractive due to technological advances, cybersecurity, and data protection.

3.Juriste (Lawyer / Legal Counsel )

Analyst, strategist, and defender, the Juriste is a legal expert who serves as a central advisor for companies facing legal issues. Their primary mission is to protect the interests of the organization or client.

Depending on specialization (banking law, tax law, labor law, corporate law, environmental law, or industrial and intellectual property), the Juriste ensures compliance with legal standards. They participate in strategic decisions, conduct constant regulatory monitoring, draft and negotiate contracts, manage disputes, and provide legal support across all departments.

4. juridique juridique (Legal Secretary )

The Secrétaire juridique ensures the administrative and organizational functioning of a law firm, notarial office, or in-house legal department. Tasks include scheduling, preparing meetings, formatting legal documents, and tracking cases.

Mastery of legal terminology and procedures is essential, along with proficiency in digital tools for document and case management.

5.Huissier de justice ( Judicial Officer / Bailiff)

As a ministerial and public officer, the Huissier de justice plays a key role in enforcing judicial decisions and serving official legal documents.

Bound by professional secrecy, they are the only practitioners authorized to carry out essential procedural steps, such as summoning parties, delivering judgments, and ensuring procedural rigor.

This profession is currently evolving into the status of Commissaire de justice, a change set to take effect in 2026. To qualify, a specialized program at the Institut National de Formation des Commissaires de Justice will become mandatory.

6.Greffier (Court Clerk)

The Greffier plays a crucial role in courts, assisting magistrates. They handle the administrative and legal management of cases, safeguard documents, and ensure traceability of judicial decisions.

Access to the profession requires passing the concours de greffier, organized by the Ministry of Justice. While the baccalauréat is sufficient, a two-year post-secondary level is preferred given the competitive nature of the exam.

7.Mandataire judiciaire (Court-Appointed Trustee / Judicial Representative)

The Mandataire judiciaire is appointed by a court when a company faces financial distress and can no longer meet its obligations. Their mission is to represent creditors, inventory debts and claims, and oversee repayment or restructuring.

This role falls under code ROME K1901, distinct from the Mandataire judiciaire à la protection des majeurs (ROME K1102), which has a different mission. The Mandataire judiciaire works closely with the Administrateur judiciaire, who primarily defends the company’s interests.

8.Administrateur judiciaire (Judicial Administrator / Insolvency Practitioner)

Unlike the Mandataire judiciaire, the Administrateur judiciaire focuses on rescuing companies in difficulty. Their mission is to assess the financial situation, perform a full diagnostic, and propose solutions such as debt rescheduling, cost reduction, or new financing.

In some cases, the court entrusts them with direct management of the company, making them a strategic actor in preserving business continuity and employment.

9.Commissaire-priseur (Auctioneer)

The Commissaire-priseur (ROME code K1901) is an art market expert specializing in the appraisal and sale of artworks, antiques, jewelry, and collectibles.

They prepare detailed inventories, produce exhaustive catalogs, and organize exhibitions before conducting public auctions. During the sale, they lead the bidding process, engage buyers, and drive auction dynamics.

10.Magistrat ( Judge / Magistrate)

The Magistrat embodies judicial authority, either by rendering justice (magistrat du siège or judge) or by representing public interest (magistrat du parquet or prosecutor).

  • The magistrat du siège resolves disputes based on facts and applicable law.
  • The magistrat du parquet leads investigations, initiates prosecutions, and advocates sanctions.

Entry into the profession requires passing the competitive exam for the École Nationale de la Magistrature (ENM), open to candidates with a Master 1 in law.
